Impact of OLLU: OLLU has helped shaped me into the person I am today. I have been able to build lifelong
friendships, with friends who I consider my home away from home. I was able to grow
in academia through the constant support of my professors, faculty mentors, advisers,
and so many more people who just want to see me succeed.
An important life lesson: When times get dark, look for the stars. Despite all the hardships and challenges,
there is always something to look forward to and will be worth it in the end. Life
comes with so many unexpected events and we must push through them to be able to see
the bigger picture, even though they may seem small at times.
Plans for the future: Through my social work field placement at La Posada, I have discovered my passion
for working with the immigrant population. As a first-generation student and Mexican
American, I have seen the sacrifices and hardships from my parents and what it took
for them to start a life in the United States. I would like to help the immigrant
population find their voice and advocate for them in whatever way I can. I plan on
moving back home and work with a nonprofit organization to help immigrants, and plan
on starting grad school in the fall. I hope to obtain my master's in social work and
possibly strive for a PhD.
