OLLU Dance Team Makes History at NAIA National Championships

Apr 15, 2025

The Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) Competitive Dance team made school and state history as they became the first team from Texas to compete in the NAIA Competitive Dance National Championships, held in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

The Saints earned their spot on the national stage by taking first place at the NAIA Dance Qualifier hosted by Loyola New Orleans earlier this month, with qualifying scores of 71.5 and 71.9. At the championships, the team delivered strong performances with scores of 68.67 on day one and 69.23 in the final round—securing an impressive 11th place national ranking.

Head Spirit Coach Crystal Brock praised the team’s historic run:

“Our dancers performed exceptionally well, executing a highly technical routine that showcased jazz, pom, and hip-hop elements. There were many standout moments throughout the week, both as a team and individually. This team has left an unforgettable mark—they are now part of OLLU Dance history as true legends.”

Senior captain Madison Smith was named OLLU’s NAIA Champion of Character for her leadership and sportsmanship throughout the season. Coach Brock shared,

“Madison has grown tremendously as an athlete during her time at OLLU. More importantly, she has become a mentor and role model for her teammates and future Saints.”

With this historic appearance, the Saints conclude their season ranked 11th in the nation, proudly representing OLLU, San Antonio, and the entire state of Texas.
