Areas of Expertise

Mathematics and Mathematics Education. I investigate how post-secondary students learn, use, and perceive mathematics in their academic lives. Areas of specialty include mathematical abstraction processes, student motivation and sense of belonging in the mathematics classroom. 

Teaching Philosophy

Mathematics exists within the minds of those who practice it; and so to learn mathematics is to build a system of interconnected concepts within one's own mind. I believe that teaching, especially in mathematics, involves the creation of active and engaging experiences which allow students to develop such mental structures for themselves. I invite students to seek mathematical connections in their daily lives through data-driven explorations that they create and control.

Outside Interests

I have spent over two decades building my own home in the Hill Country. I enjoy carpentry and woodworking, spending time with my family, and studying Aikido in my spare time.
