Curriculum Vitae

Areas of Expertise

My expertise is in the history of Egypt, the Middle East, and the Islamic world (Afro-Eurasia) since the rise of Islam in the 7th century. I am also interested in the social history of medicine, and how it was used to discriminate and differentiate races and classes in the era of European colonialism (both at home and elsewhere).

Teaching Philosophy

Students learn as much through activities and discussion with each other as they do from me. My job as the instructor is to help students understand why we know (or think we know) what we do about history, and where that knowledge comes from -- and why, as a result, history is always changing. I personally believe that students who think they "don't like history" actually just don't like how they've been taught history, and I hope to change their minds!

Outside Interests

Food, photography, travel, museums, art, architecture, RuPaul's Drag Race, scratching cats behind the ears, dogs who are good boys and girls (yes they are), and occasionally nerding out in weird places.
